Startling research findings of Science master students

Gepubliceerd op 30 June 2011

Master students of the Faculty of Science (Mathematics and science education master) found during their research, persistent mathematical misconceptions among high school students with a mathematical profile. Their findings are so startling that the master students will present their work at the Psychology of Mathematics Education Conference in Ankara (10-15 July).

For this conference forty percent of the proposals is rejected, but the master students passed the peer review.

Özcan Demir and Amdeberhan Ayeligne researched retention (the retaining of knowledge) and found intractable mathematical misconceptions among students, who followed a mathematical profile.
Athina Stagalinou and Reshmi Pradeep researched learning fractions in secondary education and found that the so-called charge-transition algebra '(understanding that 1/x resembles 1/3) is much more problematic than previously thought. (Source: FNWI/UvA)
